Occupational Therapists help children reach their fullest potential within their “occupations” or daily activities. For children, these daily activities include play, learning and socialization. Sometimes, challenges in the areas of sensory processing, gross, fine, oral-motor and visual-motor skills can prevent a child from developing the skills necessary to function and engage successfully in their home, school, play and community environments. Speech Therapists help children with a variety of speech and language deficits as well as feeding and swallowing difficulties. We focus on an individualized therapy program to help each child reach their greatest level of communication and interaction within their environment. It is our mission to create family-centered, meaningful interventions that address the individual goals of each child. We use an approach that gives strong consideration to the individual differences of each child including his or her ability to process the world around them and engage in it in a meaningful way. Because each child brings a different set of strengths and challenges to the table, we implement a variety of therapeutic intervention strategies to help the child move towards independence.  It is our goal to identify the barriers that inhibit the child from reaching their goals and to carefully construct a plan to help them reach their fullest potential.

Senses in Motion

Senses in Motion provides experiences of movement that rewire the neuromuscular system, connecting the brain and body for greater ease of movement and function. Rene’ Manker is a Physical Therapist, Anat Baniel Method(ABM) Practitioner and owner of Senses in Motion.

The technique that is primarily used for treatment is the Anat Baniel Method of Neuromovement, and is based on the pioneering work of Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais who developed the Feldenkrais Method of Somatic Education.

The focus of ABM is on education. It connects the body and brain through subtle, gentle movement experiences (movement lessons) that promote kinesthetic awareness of how to move. By helping a child sense how he is moving and by inviting him to experience small variations of that familiar movement, he learns new possibilities of movement that feel good and make sense to him resulting in better mobility, coordination, balance and function. ABM connects children and adults to their bodies to help them sense and organize themselves from the inside out rather than the outside in.

Each session is called a Movement Lesson because the emphasis is on learning rather than exercise. Each body part that is needed for the execution of a particular function that we are working on is “awakened” so that it can participate in the overall final goal or meaningful function. Children say it feels good, is easy, and fun!

I feel very privileged to be able to collaborate with FHF !

Vision and Sensory Center

We understand that the brain is Neuroplastic and therefore can create or repair neural connections. We believe that we have the ability to retrain the brain or create “new software” for essential skills, or enhancement of those we already have. Our approach is developmental; engaging our bodies and movement in the visual process, integrating vision with our other senses, and learning to think visually. Each patient’s needs are addressed individually with special attention to the person as a whole. No patient is too young or too old to achieve success.

We were absolutely elated to receive your scholarship to help pay for programming for our son, Samuel, who is on the autism spectrum. We have been working with Horizons Developmental Resource Center for a couple of years and have seen wonderful social changes for Samuel. The cost is high, which makes each year of paying for programming a matter of prayer and sacrifice to our family with our spending. It is a relief to have this scholarship to help us pay for Samuel's programming. We are so impressed with the progress Samuel has made with his social skills. Samuel will now communicate his needs and concerns with words instead of crying and having a temper tantrum. We see Samuel work toward completing activities independently instead of needing constant prompts from us. Another wonderful change is that Samuel desires to interact with peers, instead of hiding from them. Again, thank you for helping us to continue to offer the best programming for Samuel!
